Why it fits tonight: Fully cooked chicken sausage does the heavy lifting, cabbage cooks fast in the same skillet, and the sauce is mixed right in the pan. It is the dinner equivalent of finding twenty dollars in a winter coat pocket.

Cost is an estimate based on typical U.S. grocery prices in August 2026 and proportional use of pantry basics. Your store, region, brands, and sales will change the total.

Why It Works Tonight

Fast without feeling flimsy: the sausage brings the savory flavor while cabbage adds volume and crunch. No side-dish tax: it is filling enough to stand alone, but bread or leftover rice can stretch it further. Flavor stays flexible: the honey-mustard finish is mild, and you can keep a few sausage coins plain for cautious eaters.

Chicken Sausage & Cabbage Skillet Recipe

Serves: 4  ·  Prep: 5 minutes  ·  Cook: 10 minutes  ·  Total: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 oz fully cooked chicken sausage, sliced into coins
  • ½ large green cabbage, thinly sliced, about 6 cups
  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Important: Use sausage clearly labeled chicken sausage. Weeknight Family Meals does not use pork sausage.

Instructions

  1. Brown the sausage. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken sausage and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the cut sides pick up some color.
  2. Add the vegetables. Add the onion and cabbage with a small pinch of salt. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, tossing often, until the cabbage softens but still has a little bite.
  3. Make the fast finish. Lower the heat. Add the Dijon, honey, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and a few grinds of black pepper. Toss for 30 to 60 seconds until everything is lightly glossy.
  4. Taste and serve. Add another tiny splash of vinegar if you want more brightness. Serve immediately.

Make This Card Fit Your Night

Make It Cheaper

Use 10 ounces of sausage and the full half-head of cabbage. The cabbage is inexpensive bulk, so it stretches the protein without making dinner feel skimpy.

Picky-Eater Move

Brown a few sausage coins separately before adding the cabbage. Serve them with bread, rice, or fruit while everyone else gets the finished skillet.

Lowest-Effort Shortcut

Use a bag of plain coleslaw mix instead of slicing cabbage. Dinner loses several knife minutes and gains absolutely no complaints from the cutting board.

Use What You Have

Swap yellow onion for red onion, or use a teaspoon of maple syrup instead of honey. A little shredded carrot can join the cabbage without changing the method.

Leftovers Tomorrow

Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave until hot. For lunch, spoon the leftovers into a warm tortilla with a little shredded cheese, or serve over leftover rice.
